Senior Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice
Iris Ying was born in Beijing, China, but spent the majority of her childhood in the Chicago area. She graduated cum laude from Amherst College in 2006 and Berkeley Law School in 2011. Prior to law school, Iris spent two years as a US Peace Corps volunteer in Jamaica working with a small community group on sustainable agricultural projects.
Iris knew that she intended to dedicate her life to criminal justice ever since she was twelve years old and first heard how both her grandfathers had been falsely imprisoned during the Chinese Cultural Revolution for being American spies. However, it wasn’t until a college summer internship as an investigator at Bronx Defenders when Iris first felt the thrill and indignation of being a public defender; and knew that there was no other career path she could ever take.
During law school, Iris learned how to be a zealous advocate through summer internships with San Francisco Public Defender’s Office and Public Defender Service in Washington D.C. Iris spent her third year as an exchange student at Harvard Law School and defended clients in Roxbury District Court as part of the Criminal Justice Institute clinic.
Iris is delighted to have her dream job as a public defender at Brooklyn Defender Services.
