Bert Roughton

Senior Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice

Bert was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He received his B.A. in Political Science from the University of Georgia in 2006. After graduating from college, Bert moved back to Atlanta to volunteer for the Georgia Justice Project, assisting in the representation of people who were at risk of losing their homes.

Bert moved to New York in 2007 to attend New York Law School where he received his J.D. in 2010. During law school, Bert interned at South Brooklyn Legal Services and the California Appellate Project in San Francisco. Bert was a member of the New York Law School Law Review, a contributor to the International  Review, a Public Interest Fellow and a recipient of the Ruben S. Fogel Commencement Award for Excellence in Constitutional History and Death Penalty.

After law school, Bert returned to Georgia to work at the Office of the Public Defender in the Atlanta Judicial Circuit. Bert spent four years in Atlanta, representing hundreds of poor people charged with felony crimes. During that time, Bert became an active participant in Gideon’s Promise, an organization dedicated to reforming and strengthening indigent defense in the south and across the country.
