Staff Attorney, Family Defense Practice
Julia Popkin joined Brooklyn Defender Services Family Defense Practice in 2017. Julia graduated from New York University School of Law magna cum laude and Order of the Coif. At NYU, she was an Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties Fellow and a student advocate in the Family Defense Clinic for two years. Julia was awarded the Ann Petluck Poses Memorial Prize for Outstanding Clinical Work for her participation in the Family Defense Clinic. During law school, Julia interned with the Civil Action Practice and the Family Defense Practice at the Bronx Defenders, the Family Defense Practice at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, and the Prisoners’ Rights Project of the Legal Aid Society in Manhattan.
Prior to law school, Julia lived in western Massachusetts, where she grew up, working at a community action agency, first as a parent advocate in a program designed to provide advocacy and support to teenaged parents, and then as a resource advocate, connecting community members to housing, health care, public benefits, and nutritional assistance. She was also an advocate with Volunteers for Justice, a volunteer legal services project that provides assistance to low-income tenants facing eviction.
Julia received her B.A. in Sociology from Wesleyan University, where she focused on issues related to public assistance and affordable housing.
Julia is proud to represent Brooklyn parents in family court.
