Social Worker, Criminal Defense Practice
Maria Muentes is a native New Yorker.
She was thrilled to join BDS in the summer of 2015. She has a background in advocacy and has worked around issues of economic justice for over twenty years. She was a housing advocate with University Settlement’s Project Home, which helped tenants facing eviction and displacement from the Lower East Side, while there she earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work from Hunter College. She became active in the immigrant rights movement and helped co-found the family based activist organization Families For Freedom.
After graduating from Social Work school she went to work for Housing Court Answers and supervised their program which helps pro-se litigants in Housing Court throughout the five boroughs. She is a proud mother and has a daughter and a son. She loves writing and her writings have been published in The Indypendent, City Limits, El Diario La Prensa and War Resister’s league WIN magazine.
