Melissa Mills was born and raised in Brooklyn. She has a BA in Sociology from St. Francis College and earned her Master in Social Work from Fordham University Graduate School of Social Service.

While in undergraduate school, Melissa participated in an internship at the Adolescent Linkage Transition Program were she assisted in case management and supportive services for adolescents with mental illness involved in the criminal justice system. During her first year of social work school, she completed an internship at the PostGraduate Center for Mental Health Supportive House Residence where she provided supportive case management and coordinated services for clients with mental illness and substance abuse. During her second year in social work school, Melissa began an internship at the Brooklyn Family Defense Practice where she was able to begin to work in Family Court for the first time. After completing her internship, Melissa was hired as a full-time staff social worker at BFDP.

Melissa has always known that she has wanted to work to promote social justice. She is passionate about protecting the rights of low-income parents. She especially enjoys her work at BDS were she is able to work with interdisciplinary teams of social workers and lawyers. Melissa is a Licensed Master Social Worker and is currently working on achieving her Supervision in Field Instruction (SIFI) certification to supervise master level social work students.
