Civil Rights Counsel
Brooke Menschel is the Civil Rights Counsel at the Brooklyn Defender Services. She works across the criminal, civil, immigration, and family practice groups to develop and implement affirmative strategies to address systemic deficiencies in New York City’s family, immigration, and criminal courts and department of corrections. She provides individualized advocacy for clients detained in New York City’s jails and those in immigration proceedings in the area.
Prior to joining BDS, Brooke served as a Senior Staff Attorney at the Southern Poverty Law Center from 2014-2017, litigating federal children’s rights, juvenile justice and mass incarceration cases in the Deep South during pre-trial, trial, appellate, and post-settlement proceedings. Immediately after graduating from law school, she was an Attorney with the New York affiliate of the ACLU from 2011-2014. She received her JD from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University in 2011 and her BA from Tufts University in 2002.
