Senior Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice
A native Brooklynite, Hela joined Brooklyn Defender Services after earning her J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law. She received her undergraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism from Brooklyn College, CUNY.
Prior to attending law school, Hela was a Litigation Paralegal at Sullivan & Worcester LLP, where watching her colleagues, now mentors, practice law inspired her to pursue the profession. But it was watching her current colleagues fight like hell on behalf of their clients as a law student intern that inspired her to become a public defender.
In addition to criminal defense work, Hela has a passion for teaching. In 2008, Hela returned to her alma mater as an adjunct lecturer in the Television and Radio Department. She also worked as a Torts Teaching Assistant after her first year of law school.
As a former BDS intern, Hela is thrilled to be a member of the BDS family.
