Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice
A native Brooklynite, Hela joined Brooklyn Defender Services after earning her J.D. from St. John’s University School of Law.
She received her undergraduate degree in Broadcast Journalism from Brooklyn College, CUNY. In 2008, Hela returned to her alma mater as an adjunct lecturer in the Television and Radio Department.
Having a passion for teaching, after her first year of law school, she worked as a Torts Teaching Assistant.
Prior to attending law school, Hela was a Litigation Paralegal at Sullivan & Worcester LLP, where watching her colleagues, now mentors, practice law inspired her to pursue the profession.
But, it was watching her current colleagues fight like hell on behalf of their clients that inspired her to become a public defender. As a former BDS intern, Hela is thrilled to be a member of the BDS family.
