Anya Mukarji-Connolly joined the Brooklyn Defenders Services-Family Defense Practice as a Supervising Attorney in December 2015. Prior to that, Anya was the Supervising Attorney for the New York Legal Assistance Group’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Law Project where she led the Project’s civil legal services on behalf of low-income LGBTQ New Yorkers.
Anya was previously a staff attorney in BDS’s Family Defense Practice for four years where she defended low-income parents involved in the child welfare system in Brooklyn. Before joining BDS in 2010, Anya was a staff attorney and later the Director of the Peter Cichino Youth Project (PCYP) at the Urban Justice Center providing legal services to homeless and street-involved LGBTQ young people in New York City.
Anya is a graduate of the City University of New York School of Law and a former Equal Justice Works fellow. She has been an advocate for low-income, homeless and LGBTQ communities for over fourteen years. She is currently on the Advisory Board of the LGBTQ Law Project and was also formerly on the Board of Directors for Streetwise and Safe (SAS) and FIERCE!, both community-based organizations by and for LGBTQ youth of color.
