Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice
Ryan Cleary was born and raised in Levittown, Long Island and received his JD with honors, pro bono distinction, and certificate in criminal law from Touro Law School in 2014. During his time at Touro Law, Mr. Cleary interned with the New York Civil Liberties Union where he worked on class action litigation to ensure the right of effective assistance of counsel at all stages of criminal proceedings and alternatives to incarceration. Mr. Cleary went to law school to become a public defender and his experience externing with BDS cemented his desire to work for the people of Brooklyn, and he feels privileged to be able to do so.
Prior to law school, Mr. Cleary attended the College of Charleston where he received Bachelor Degrees in history and secondary education in 2004. During this time, Mr. Cleary worked for Head Start and developed after school programs in Charleston. After graduating, Mr. Cleary taught public school in rural South Carolina while earning Masters Degrees in history from The Citadel and the College of Charleston, where his research focused on 20th century United States social movements.
