Sarah Burleson is a 2008 graduate of New York University School of Law and hails from the State of Texas. Sarah was first called to public service upon graduation from Texas Christian University, when she moved to Guatemala to serve in the United States Peace Corps as a municipal development volunteer. Living in a small Mayan community, she worked with citizen groups to organize and implement various infrastructural and social development projects designed to improve both public health and educational opportunities, and worked with local indigenous women’s groups conducting education workshops regarding their civil rights.

Upon returning to the United States, Sarah worked in political advocacy for cultural and environmental causes before attending New York University School of Law where she focused her study on civil rights and social justice, served as an editor on the Journal of International Law and Politics, was an officer in the Latino Law Student Association, and a participant in the Orison S. Marden Oral Advocacy Competition. During her time at NYU Law, Sarah earned a concurrent Masters in Public Policy from Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, with a focus on the causes and effects of crime in underserved communities. As a graduate student, Sarah worked with NYU Law’s Economic Development Clinic, the Legal Aid Society (Manhattan Criminal Defense Division), the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago, Goodwin Procter LLP, and the Honorable Patti B. Saris, District Judge for the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts. Sarah graduated with a Juris Doctorate and Masters in Public Policy in 2008.

Prior to joining Brooklyn Defender Services, Sarah was a commercial litigation associate at Goodwin Procter LLP where she spent almost two years in the appellate defense of an inmate on Alabama’s death row. Admitted to the bar in the State of New York and a fluent Spanish-speaker, Sarah is proud to be a public defender, to serve her clients, and to dedicate her career to this calling.
