Stacy is excited to be joining Brooklyn Defender Services, its team and its mission. Stacy graduated with a Master’s of Science in Social Work from Columbia University’s School of Social Work where she concentrated her studies in program development and general practice. While there, she interned at STEPS to End Family Violence’s Alternative to Incarceration program. At STEPS, Stacy provided individual counseling and court advocacy services, and facilitated educational and support groups for women whose histories of domestic violence intersected with their pending criminal charges. During this internship, she also enjoyed leading a support group for incarcerated mothers who were detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.

After completing her MSSW, Stacy joined The Osborne Association’s Court Advocacy Services program. For more than six years, she had the pleasure of working with colleagues who were strong advocates working towards criminal justice reform and she had many mentors there. Stacy was an advocate and then senior advocate in Court Advocacy Services and provided social work support, investigation and advocacy services to defense attorneys, primarily on the Assigned Counsel Plan. Working on felony cases throughout New York City’s five boroughs and supreme courts, she conducted client investigations and assessments, wrote persuasive pre-pleading and pre-sentencing memoranda highlighting mitigation and developed client treatment plans, which were often approved in court to serve as alternatives to incarceration. Beginning in 2007 and in addition to her advocacy work, she also supervised an MSW social work intern each academic year, experiences that she found especially gratifying.

Stacy also earned a BSW from New York University’s School of Social Work, where she was a social work intern in the youth services department of Grand Street Settlement on the Lower East Side and a volunteer mentor to students in upper Manhattan. Between her undergraduate and graduate studies, Stacy worked for two years in Ft. Greene, Brooklyn, on a school-based social work team with the agency, Partnership with Children.
