Senior Staff Attorney, Criminal Defense Practice
Piyali joins BDS with extensive experience in public interest law. As a law student at Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Ma, Piyali interned at Greater Boston Legal Services in both the housing unit and family law unit. At the Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs she researched proposed legislation to better empower consumers. It was her clerkship for the Boston Family Court, however, that inspired her current work as a family defender. Since joining the family defense practice she has fought for the due process rights of over 300 parents in Brooklyn. She has also helped start Know Your Rights trainings, community trainings to educate parents about their rights and responsibilities. She started a Young Mothers Empowerment Project that provides community workshops for young mothers.
Piyali is currently receiving a Masters in Middle Eastern Studies, studying the experiences of the Muslim diaspora.
She speaks Bengali and French and is currently learning Arabic.
