FAMILY DEFENSE PRACTICE – STAFF ATTORNEY CLASS OF 2018

BDS seeks full time entry-level staff attorneys for our class of 2018 to begin next September.

BDS’s Family Defense Practice (FDP) represents low-income parents in child welfare cases in Brooklyn Family Court. Our mission is to fight again the unnecessary removal of children from their families and when that is not possible, to advocate for families to be reunified quickly. FDP defends parents’ due process rights by fighting unwarranted state intervention in their lives. Using a holistic and interdisciplinary approach, our diverse teams of attorneys and social workers help families obtain the benefits and services they need to keep their families safe and stable. Central to our mission is advocating for systemic change in the family court and child welfare systems. Client representation includes frequent contested hearings, discovery and motion practice, as well as out of court advocacy and settlement negotiations.

Qualifications:

Candidates are expected to have excellent written and oral communication skills; to work well in a team; and to thrive in a fast-paced, client-centered litigation practice. Spanish speakers or those with other language skills are strongly encouraged to apply.

Job responsibilities:

FDP has a very high volume practice. Attorneys spend most of their days in court and frequently conduct hearings and trials, often on an emergency basis. Staff attorneys are expected to provide high-quality and vigorous representation at all court appearances and throughout the course of a case. Our office takes a collaborative team approach to representation and attorneys work closely with social workers to provide interdisciplinary representation that includes assistance on related legal matters, such as housing, immigration, public benefits and education matters.
