BDS JOINS NEW YORK IMMIGRATION COALITION TO URGE NYC COUNCIL TO SUPPORT IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES
Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) joined the New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and immigration legal service providers from across the City to urge the New York City Council to support immigration legal services in next year’s budget. Council Members Carlos Menchaca and Vanessa L. Gibson spoke about the critical need for the Council to invest in New York’s immigrant families by increasing funding for immigration legal services.
Since 2009, BDS has counseled, advised or represented more than 6,500 immigrant clients. In 2015 alone, we handled more than 1,500 immigration matters across a full spectrum of services. We defend detained clients facing deportation, immigrant clients identified through our criminal and family defense dockets, and clients referred from our community partners or who connect with us through community outreach clinics.
